Network Design and Support
Networking your office computers is simple, inexpensive, and offers tremendous benefits, such as:
- Sharing Printers: Save money by buying just a couple of printers everyone can share.
- File Sharing: Setting up a file server provides a central location for critical data, allowing multiple people to use it, and making backups easier and more reliable.
- Security: Can be set up to ensure sensitive data is protected. A secured, locked-up network server is much safer than a desktop computer for sensitive data like payroll and accounting records. Storing all data on a server takes sensitive data off desktop PCs.
- Internet Access: Networked computers can access the Internet and email. Email can be a great tool within your company, and when dealing with the outside world.
- Wireless: Do you have frequent visitors? Having wireless Internet available may be a great idea. We can plan your wireless network to be secure and convenient.
- Building a Network: Wireless networks can operate on the same principles as cordless telephones, eliminating unsightly wires and allowing freedom of movement. Standard network cabling and cards are extremely affordable and can be set up quickly.

Virus Protection and Removal
Virus protection software is mandatory on all computers to prevent data disasters. Virus software is not created equal.
We strongly recommend using a centrally managed anti-virus system for businesses with three or more PCs:
- Centrally managed software is easy to keep tabs on. We can look in one place and see the current status of all of your PCs. If there is a virus infection we can fight it on all PCs simultaneously.
- We can establish rules that prevent anti-virus software from being disabled, either intentionally or inadvertently.
- The annual anti-virus subscription for each PC renews at the same time, preventing individual PCs from being without critical protection at any time.
- Centrally managed software is generally less expensive than individual copies of anti-virus software
Our preferred anti-virus vendors offer first class protection at a very reasonable price.

Network Security
There are a lot of dangers out there! Computer viruses are all around us, infecting email messages, computers, and files.
Many viruses are just nuisances (e.g. popping up excessive advertising when you’re surfing the web), but some can be very damaging and erase years of information.
Furniture, tools, and inventory can all be replaced by insurance after a disaster -- your company’s critical data can only be replaced if you are diligent about security today, before something happens.
We look at network security from these standpoints:
- Education: Educating users about “safe computing” is our No. 1 priority, because it is the most effective way to avoid problems. Think how many billions of dollars could have been saved if employees had been trained to not open strange, virus-ridden email attachments.
- Virus Protection: The Melissa virus, Code Red, and other nasty viruses are out there, and nobody is immune. Every computer should have recent anti-virus software installed, and the virus definitions should be automatically updated regularly. The newest software will scan email as well, reducing the chance of evil attachments creating damage.
- Firewalls: Any connection to the Internet represents an opportunity for a “hacker” to get into your network. Although no network security is completely secure (Yahoo, the CIA, and other huge web sites have been hacked!), we will set up a firewall and security arrangements that will minimize risks and deter evildoers.
- Internal Security: Statistics show your own employees are far more likely to create security problems than any outside intruder. Secure servers, user permissions, activity logging, and minimizing data stored on individual computers are ways to minimize this threat.
- Backups: It is critical to back up data regularly to prepare for catastrophes. Fires, floods, hardware failure, human error, hackers, and viruses can all ruin your day (or career) without backups. Accounting systems, product designs and drawings, customer mailing lists, payroll records, marketing plans and files. . . When was the last time you backed up?

Wireless Networking
Wireless networks are an exciting way to provide network connectivity without the expense of running wires in your building. But wireless networking is not without pitfalls:
- Security: Wireless systems use radio technology to broadcast sensitive network data. It is imperative proper precautions are in place to prevent unauthorized access to your financial data, client lists, and other confidential information.
- A, B, G or N? There are multiple standards for wireless networks. Each has its own speeds, radio frequencies, pros, and cons. Which to use? We’ll figure it out for you.
- Interference: Wireless networking is very popular, but not everyone knows what they are doing. We often find poorly-configured wireless systems in offices interfere with our customers’ wireless networks. Sometimes the potential for interference outweighs the benefits of being wire-free. We’ll help you decide what is best for your business.
